The building, which blends elements of Romanesque and Baroque architecture, was originally intended for the shepherds, farmers and men-at-arms of the medieval Rocca di Caldé, within whose walls it was located. The chapel was built starting in 1200, and was maintained even after the destruction of the castle, which occurred in 1513 by the Swiss. The church was later enlarged with large stone ashlar facings and rustic roofs.
The church of Santa Veronica stands on the first lower bastion of the Caldè fortress, a rugged promontory wedged into the waters of Lake Maggiore which, at least since the 10th century, was almost entirely converted into a military garrison dependent on the Archbishop of Milan.
This location is only 10 minutes far from the main parkplace of Caldè and it could be reached by a path, surrounded by nature. From the top you can appreciate a beautifull view of the Gulf. Going ahead you can reach on the top of the cliff the momument dedicated to the fallen soldiers of the second world war.
Ideal for a short trip to appreciate the Caldè surroundings.
